REVIEW: Iced Earth - Tribute To The Gods Century Media, 2002
6/10
Iced Earth - Tribute To The Gods - cover art As a final attempt to squeeze some extra money out of Iced Earth before Steamhammer Records put their hands on them, Century Media are releasing the 5 CD box set called Dark Genesis but also this new album from the band. "Tribute To The Gods" is of course not dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and their friends but is a tribute to the gods of metal. Here we are given the chance to hear what famous songs from KISS, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath sounds like done the Iced Earth way. Unfortunately hardly any, if any, of these songs sound better than the original versions. The production is dead boring and sterile the way that only suits real Iced Earth songs. The two things that lift this album from being a complete disaster considering who we're dealing with here are the voice of Matthew Barlow and the strength that some of these songs still carry from their creation once upon a time. Not entirely bad but I'm certainly glad that most bands stay away from doing something like this. Definitely not an album to kill for unless you're a big (and I do mean big!) Iced Earth fan(atic).
