REVIEW: Icon Of Hyemes - Unpopular Self-financed, 2002
7.5/10
Icon Of Hyemes - Unpopular - cover art The Italian five-piece orchestra Icon Of Hyemes was one of the most positive surprises I have encountered so far this year. I have been subjected to what seems to be hundreds yet hundreds of Italian metal bands the past couple of months but none has really made such a big impression on me as these guys. This self-financed recording, made with help from the Italian promotion agency Kick, presents a band that takes the best riffs from brutal and technical death metal and blends them with a slice of intense Scandinavian death / thrash riffs and also throws in a few nice melodies. The vocalist is also doing a great job behind the microphone and is capable of invoking both powerful demonic black metal tinged growling as well as raspier screaming. These guys have been together since 1999 but a couple of members earlier played together in a death metal band called December since 1996. In my opinion it is now time for them to sign a record deal because they sure deserve it. If you fancy death metal in any form whatsoever you should be able to enjoy this band. Nothing out of the ordinary but it still sounds fresh and exciting.
