"What a strange title for a CD!", you might think. What kind of music do you expect, when you hear "Alfons & Co" from Ikinae, which means "never" (ikinä) in Finnish language.
Whatever you might think, the quite young quintet from Finland produced an interesting Progressive Metal piece of music. So let me shed some light on the album with a somewhat "strange" title.
The first track "Alfons The Man" is the song, which is maybe a bit easier to listen to than the second one. During over five minutes you find e.g. Iron Maiden-like tunes sung by a, in my opinion, very talented vocalist. (Toni Niemi). But not only the vocalist is able to show his qualities, all the other bandmembers as well, are technically/musically on top of things as well.
The second song "Pseudologica Fantastica" is pretty doomy and dark in contrast to the first song and it reminds me quite a lot of Opeth. Especially the beginning with the dark growls and damn heavy riffs.
This is the first song for Toni Niemi to use growls, when it´s already that good, what comes next?
Quite a chameolonic mixture within only two songs. Which isn´t bad at all, as the band is able to show, that they don´t only have the technical skills, but also the feeling for writing interesting songs.
I hope they continue with this nice mixture of different styles where melody and brighter parts meet gloomy and heavy ones. Using growls was a good decision as well, so keep it up!
Definitely a recommendable CD for all Prog/Powermetal fans out there! So there´s only one thing left for me to say : I really hope that Ikinae are going to release a full-lenghth album pretty soon, since they already released 3 Singles/EPs, that have been received quite well. There´s more than enough potential for all the things to come.
