REVIEW: Illnath - Cast Into Fields Of Evil Pleasure Worldchaos Production, 2003
7/10
Illnath - Cast Into Fields Of Evil Pleasure - cover art Denmark isn't exactly as well-known for their black metal scene as their northern neighbours Sweden and Norway but Illnath is definitely the most impressive of the Danish bands at the moment. I was surprised when I heard their self-produced mini album over a year ago, not only because of the close to amazing quality of the production but also the very high musicianship of the band members. At first this band was to utilize the drumming services of the Susperia and ex-Dimmu Borgir drummer Tjodalv but eventually they found a native drummer who was good enough. Illnath obviously know what they are doing and after the successful mini album they have now signed a deal with the Japanese label World Chaos Production to release their first full-length entitled "Cast Into The Fields Of Evil Pleasure". Illnath have decided to focus on the modern, more commercial style of black metal performed by bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth with catchy riffs, dynamic and less raw vocals and a lot of melodies, almost always enhanced with keyboards. Their vocalist Narrenschiff (former vocalist of the Norwegian black metal band Ásmegin) also does his best to sound like Dani Filth and manages to come very close. It is very easy to just throw Illnath into a pile of Cradle clones but what separates this Danish band from the rest of the clones is that they do what they really well. They even have some female vocals in a couple of songs which sound pretty good. One thing that is different compared to Cradle is that Illnath have stronger influences from classical music when it comes to melodies and keyboard arrangements. Illnath is perhaps a little bit more melodic than they are atmospheric but I would still recommend this band to every fan of melodic black metal who doesn't fear catchy heavy metal riffs, keyboards or female vocals. The first half of the album is great but unfortunately it gets a little boring towards the end.
