REVIEW: Illnath - Second Skin Of Harlequin Deathlight Records, 2007
6.5/10
Illnath - Second Skin Of Harlequin - cover art Illnath, the Danish band featuring former Ásmegin frontman Narrenschiff are now set to release their second full-length album, following up on their 2003 debut "Cast Into Fields Of Evil Pleasure". Some of you may already have heard "Second Skin Of Harlequin" as it was issued in Japan last year but now it is finally being spread throughout the rest of the world as well. Illnath further accentuates their blend of ultra-melodic black / gothic metal with their sophomore album. In other words this is nothing for all you Darkthrone purists out there. Illnath have clearly been inspired by the early work from Dimmu Borgir and mid-period Cradle Of Filth but there are also similarities to Sirenia when it comes to song structures. The keyboard arrangements maintain a prominent position and they are often delivering an almost cheerful and upbeat atmosphere to the songs which provides a nice contrast to the harsh vocals from Narrenschiff. Throw in a few decent heavy metal solos in the right places and the mix is complete. Not very original but well executed easy listening.
