My first encounter with this Italian band was when I heard their self-financed three track EP "Polymorphism Of Death" back in 2002. I then anticipated that Illogicist would soon find themselves signed to a worthy label and now the time has come for the American label Crash Music Inc. (ex-Pavement Music) to release their debut album "Subjected". Not much has changed, they still play heavy, melodic and technical death metal with strong progressive leanings. Death, Cynic and Pestilence have all been in the school books of these gentlemen from the land of pasta and pizza. Illogist have managed to include progressive elements in their music without losing much of the intensity that many death metal fans require to be able to appreciate what they're hearing. As individual musicians they definitely have a lot of talent and for instrumental freaks "Subjected" should be a wonderful experience. While not abandoning the Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.) legacy Illogist allow themselves to add a nice groovy vibe to some of their songs. It is not very appropriate to talk about "songs" in the regular meaning of the word when discussing music of this kind, instead you might call the tracks pieces of the whole. Every piece is necessary on an album like this one and can not be dissected one by one. The vocals are decent but not more but musically Illogist should appeal to fans of Death and maybe also Atheist.
