Four tracks ranging from 6 to 9 minutes in length usually means either doom metal or progressive metal. Here we have the latter from the young Swedish band Illusion Of Clarity. The band formed in Stockholm in 2003 and this is their second demo. The instrumental skills possessed by these guys are quite impressive as they plunge their way through complex song structures, diverse riffs and blazing solos. The high speed of the album makes it accessible to power metal fans while the Yngwie Malmsteen guitarwork should appeal to lovers of progressive and neo-classical music in general. Sometimes they even fall into one or two Bay Area thrash riffs. The frontman Patrik Forsberg is a good vocalist, albeit not stellar, and in the opener "Faceless" (also the best track in my opinion) his style of singing reminds me of Bruce Dickinson but usually he sounds more in the vein of modern power metal vocalists. It feels as if he's holding back slightly though and is lacking somewhat of a depth in his voice. At first one can't help but admire the musicianship of this band but in the end it tends to fall a bit flat as the material on this demo is of very different quality. It is nonetheless a pretty good demo and a promising young band.
