REVIEW: Ilvestgrol - Wastelands Self-financed, 2005
5.5/10
Ilvestgrol - Wastelands - cover art Ilvestgrol is a 2-man team of Droom (everything but vocals) and Yersinia Pestis (vocals). Curiously credited on the printout accompanying this CD-R demo is Navezgane (bass). An interview with Droom elsewhere online states that he did everything but vocals. Regardless, this is crude, underground, "kvlt, tr00, n3cr0" Black Metal that the band itself calls Wasteland Metal. That "distinction" aside, fans of demo-quality Black Metal which invokes old Bathory, old Venom, and any of the almost unlistenable Scandinavian bands in this genre might enjoy this. The drum programming is effective but definitely mechanical. The guitar riffs are pretty good and basically true to the aesthetic of this style, although massively thin sounding owing to the (lack of) production values. The bass has a few moments to shine through but the screeching vocals typical of a lot of Black Metal clearly dominate this affair. Satyricon's most recent output would be an apt comparison, musically speaking. Maybe Southern Lord in their recent Black Metal kick could sign these guys and lend them some much needed support. And production. It shows promise but is very rough. Even if they don't think they're Black Metal, they really are. 'Nuff said.
