REVIEW: Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism Osmose Productions, 1992
9.5/10
Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism - cover art A gentle acoustic guitar intro opens the album, placing you in the dark world of Immortal. As the full band rumbles to life with the classic ‘The Call of the Wintermoon’, you can sense there is something special afoot. By the time the album is closed with the acoustic outro from nine-minute epic ‘A Perfect Vision of the Rising Northland’, there is no argument; this is another classic Norwegian black metal album. The songs on the album are based around the infernal riffs of Demonaz and Abbath, with Armagedda providing the primitive, but effective percussion. As with almost all early nineties black metal, it has a very raw, garage-quality production that is more to the bands benefit than detriment. There are still indications of Immortal’s past status as a death metal band (particularly on ‘Unholy Forces of Evil’ and ‘Blacker than Darkness’), but there is definitely a stronger emphasis on atmosphere than is traditionally found in death metal. Unsurprisingly, the stronger tracks are those that favour black metal-styled riffs, like ‘Cryptic Winterstorms’, which also features some strong acoustic interludes, which were unfortunately left out of their following releases. Abbath’s vocals are (like the album in general) on the cusp of black metal and death metal yet possesses an unusually strong sense of melody for this style of music, while still retaining that ‘evil’ vibe. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism will not be everyone’s cup of tea (or chalice of blood for that matter) but is very highly recommended to fans of old school black/death metal and those looking for a pathway into that dark domain.
