REVIEW: Immortal - Sons Of Northern Darkness Nuclear Blast, 2002
9/10
Immortal - Sons Of Northern Darkness - cover art The "Damned In Black" are back again and even though they are perhaps more deathy than black these days they are one of the leading extreme metal bands in the world. This album opens up with one of the best Immortal songs so far, the straight-in-your-face killer track "One By One". This is just the beginning however and I think I dare say that this is one of the most prominent works in the Immortal catalogue so far. Intense and manic drumming, interesting tempo shifts and crushing riffs show that more than ten years of practicing have payed off big time. This is the first album on their new label Nuclear Blast and you can say what you want about them but they sure can tell good music from bad. Sometimes I find the music a little too slow but this is still a great album and fans of Immortal should not be disappointed. There are still no female vocals, no orchestral keyboards and there are no bad tracks. The mighty Norwegians have done it again. This may have been one of the last major band releases to have been recorded at Peter Tägtgren's Abyss Studio since he is now planning to concentrate more on making music than producing in the future.
