REVIEW: Impellitteri - Pedal To The Metal SPV, 2004
4/10
Impellitteri - Pedal To The Metal - cover art Impellitteri have always been one hell of an impressive band. However, that concept doesn't hold true on Pedal To The Metal, the latest full length offering by this band. Sadly, this release just sounds rather unoriginal. However, it does have its moments.

Well, as stated the album does have some catchy songs on it, such as "The Iceman Cometh," with its great harmonies and solo, "Hurricane," which is just a flat out kick you in the ass track with absolutely cheesy lightning sound effects, and "Propaganda Mind," which, next to "Punk," is such a different song compared to the others, catchy beyond belief, and by far the best track off the album. However, as you listen, if you get the nagging feeling you've heard some of these riffs before, chances are you have. Let's face it, "The Kingdom Of Titus" sounds like a blatant rip off of "Pinball Map" by In Flames.

But the real gold of this release lies within the solos. Many of them are great, but all too brief, such as on "Dance With The Devil." Sadly, on a few of these, like the aforementioned track, it's the only stand out part of the song. At times the drumming on the release is pretty good, too, like on "Crushing Daze," but some horrible vocal choices during the chorus, as well as some sections that sound like Pantera doing a breakdown without two-step pretty much destroys the flow.

If Impellitteri had made the entire album kind of like the song "Propaganda Mind," this release would have been simply amazing. Instead, we're given rather mediocre tracks, granted many are catchy, with a few decent tracks thrown in. If you just happen to be a fan of shred, then feel free to pick this up, but aside from "Crushing Daze" and the solos, there really aren't that many great shred moments by these guys. If you can find "Hurricane," "Crushing Daze," "Propaganda Mind," and "The Writing's On The Wall" available for MP3 download somewhere, you're far better off than buying this disc.
