REVIEW: Imperanon - Stained Nuclear Blast, 2004
7/10
Imperanon - Stained - cover art As soon as I heard that Imperanon had signed a multi-album deal with Nuclear Blast I listened to the demo recordings from this Finnish metal band and read their biography. This is a young band from the Finnish capital Helsinki that started out in 1999 by playing Children Of Bodom covers among others. The youngster's admiration for their better known colleagues and countrymen clearly shows on this debut offering. Especially the title track sounds extremely much like Children Of Bodom with its bombastic keyboards and characteristic guitar work. Unfortunately it feels as if Imperanon has little of their own to offer and most of this album sounds as if it was left-over material from one of Children Of Bodom's much more complete and mature albums. It's not bad at all but it lacks that little extra. If you haven't already heard enough of these Finnish bands then Imperanon is for you. The band members are nonetheless skilled musicians and I'm sure they will achieve something greater than this with future releases. I just hope that they let some of that Children Of Bodom wannabe stuff go because they need to find at least somewhat of a personal touch. It's not a complete rip-off but it's far too similar to be really interesting. The only time that I was impressed while listening to this album was the power metal song "Shadow Souls" which features some great vocals. This is a bit strange from two aspects. First off I do not generally fancy power metal in front of other genres and second it feels as if something is wrong when such a track is the best one on a melodic death metal album. Clean vocals are however used in the track "Hollow Man" as well with a pretty good result. In fact, this is something that I think Imperanon should continue to experiment with and that is perhaps what Nuclear Blast hopes for. If they improve song writing, find themselves a stronger personal style and a better growler then they could go really far. Right now they are just one of those second generation Children Of Bodom bands though.
