REVIEW: Imperious - In Splendour Retribute Records, 2003
6.5/10
Imperious - In Splendour - cover art From Nynäshamn, Sweden, hails Imperious, a death metal three-piece who have signed a deal with British Retribute Records to release their debut album "In Splendour". Previously they were known under the name Obscura and released no less than three demos under that name. This album is proof of three musicians who have grown together to create a tight and brutal outfit that will leave scars behind them, if not in your soul so in your flesh. Every string is picked with precision, every drumbeat is right in place and there is definitely not much to complain about when it comes to the instrumental skills residing within the band. However, there is more about making music that lasts than just being able to handle your instrument. Song writing skills is also necessary and this is where the weak spot with Imperious lies. It is the Achilles heel of most bands and even though you don't have to be Mozart or Vivaldi to write material for a memorable death metal album you still need to possess some talent within the field. Imperious doesn't quite have what it takes to play with the big boys in the death metal super league but they have managed to produce an album worth of music that will appeal to fans of brutal and technical death metal. If you enjoy bands like Nile, Hate Eternal, Decapitated and Deeds Of Flesh these Swedes will not disappoint you. Tight, intense and blistering death metal.
