So here we have yet another new release from a Swedish death metal/thrash act. The style is clearly defined and recognizable, not many bands break from the mold, and the number of bands producing such music is continuing to grow. I'm not saying I don't like the style, or any of the bands in the scene right now, in fact, check out my review of Hatesphere's "Bloodred Hatred," I had to struggle to find faults with the band or the album. However, they're one of the outliers, they perform music of a much higher quality than most. Unfortunately I'd have to say that Impious falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. They're technically sound, fast, and have some seriously cool riffs, but there is something missing. That something is both innovation. There is nothing to set Impious apart from the group (at least at this point in time [I've never heard any of their prior releases]) and that is their downfall on "Hellucinate."
Most of the songs are structured well and the vocals are nearly relentless, but there is that sense of stagnation that is almost beyond words. A feeling like "this song isn't really going anywhere" will haunt the listener throughout most of the album. In fact, I had trouble staying focused while listening to the entire album the first few times through. I just started to subconsciously tune it out somewhere around "Hellucinations." Then I would get ripped back into the music by either "Dish_Wish_Scar" or "Toxic Paranoia," both of which are my personal favorites. Therefore its needless to say that this is not bad music by any means. The members themselves seem quite talented, and they have a good grasp of the style they've adopted. However, they need to let out some of the pent up originality. It seems like Impious is a band that has the potential to separate themselves from the mass of European death/thrash, but they just haven't realized that potential yet. Keep your eyes peeled for future releases from this band, but this one is probably only going to please die-hard fans of the genre.
