When Impious guitarist and founding member Valle Adzic read a review of one of the band's previous albums he came up with an idea. The reason for it was that the reviewer found the music to be very good but not original. Now, how many death metal bands can be referred to as original? Anyway, this review apparently got to him and since he didn't want to change their musical direction he came to the conclusion that a concept album would be the right way to go. Well, nothing original about that either but Valle wanted to take things even further. Impious hired a professional horror comics writer from Italy called Andrea Cavaletto who designed the whole booklet as a comic book with the lyrics of each song telling a story about a man who lives under the impression that he is a true servant of God. As we are not talking about a Narnia album here, there is a lot more death, violence and blood than prayers and hope. This means absolutely nothing to me personally but I still think it's a nice creative move and I'm sure there are a bunch of young kids out there who will appreciate it more.
On to the music now then which is where my attention tends to focus. I must admit that the music of Impious is not original but, like I said before, only very few bands can be put into that category. "Holy Murder Masquerade" is indeed quite a charming death metal release which is a good start to 2007 for fans of the genre. Mid-paced, semi-epic, with a decent amount of thrash metal riffs thrown into the mix it makes for a pleasant headbanging experience. A few mood enhancing and well chosen samples along with a solid vocal performance makes it even more likely to appeal to most serious death metal fans. Even though I didn't really find any single track of the album excessively memorable I found myself listening to the album several times in a row. It is catchy and enjoyable but I think it's mostly the general atmosphere that sticks to you like glue. Recommended if you have some extra money that needs spending.
