A blink-and-you-missed-‘em sludge band from Vancouver, BC, In.Ovo released one hell of a promising indie record and then packed it in. What a goddamn shame, because this one begins with Buzz*Oven and Iron Monkey and wraps it up with Tortoise and Mono. Bass-wobbly like early Californian desert rock, percussion that vacillates between polyrhythmic jazz-congas and whack-a-mole pounding, supplemental atmosphere via piano, industrial samples and something that sounds like wayward saxophone honking but is probably just a real effed-up guitar tuning... a full and varied rigmarole, basically. Dual vocals here offer male screams as counterpoint to a full-throated female bellow from Karmin Poirier, who hints at Linda Perry or even P.J. Harvey. Mild criticisms abound, like the outside chance that the three longest songs don’t quite merit their extreme lengths, or perhaps that the rough-and-tumble production complements the heavier stuff but lays waste to the softer, more nuanced moments therein, but those are easily reconciled, for the most part. Would’ve been nice to see what became of this band several albums deep, but maybe the offshoot projects will do it justice.
