REVIEW: In Flames - The Jester Race Nuclear Blast, 1996
10/10
In Flames - The Jester Race - cover art "The Jester Racce" was the first In Flames album on Nuclear Blast (although released under license from their old / current label Wrong Again Records) and it marks the start of the very promising future of the band. Even though this must be called a death metal album it is without a doubt one of the most beautifully melodic albums ever made by a metal band. Amazing songs like "Moonshield", "Dead Eternity" and "The Jester Race" itself make sure that this album will not be forgotten easily. The death metal scene in Sweden was going through a very explosive development in the first half of the 1990's and the thing that separated many of these bands from their American fellow musicians was the very strong melodic tradition. Several of these bands have gained well deserved success over the years - Dark Tranquillity, Tiamat, Therion, Katatonia, At The Gates, Dissection just to mention a few of the most known. Not all of them are playing death metal today and I don't think anyone would have guessed what Therion would sound like later on. In Flames is one of the most successful European death metal bands ever and when hearing what they were capable of already in 1996 it's not that hard to understand the reasons behind this chain of events. The album was recorded and mixed at Studio Fredman in November of 1995, produced by maestro Fredrik Nordström together with the assistance of the band.
