REVIEW: In Flames - The Tokyo Showdown Nuclear Blast, 2001
8/10
In Flames - The Tokyo Showdown - cover art To the joy of a vast horde of In Flames supporters the Swedish masters of melodic death metal have finally unleashed their first real live assault upon the world known as Tellus. I have never been a great fan of live albums because 1) the feeling of actually being there can never be captured on any media; 2) if you want to buy a live album the band in question is probably one of your favorites and hence you already have all of their songs; 3) the sound is usually not the best. For all of these reasons I have not given this album the score that it deserves. The sound is not bad at all but it is a little too clean to be able to display any of the energy and power from the live appearance. As you can see from the track listing below most of the classics from the band have been included into the Japanese live set but the main focus obviously lies on their last three albums. Nothing new comes from this release but fans of the band will no doubt be interested in it. Regardless of my live album views there is more than one hour of some of the best music the world has to offer these days on this disc. The beautiful cover by Dark Tranquillity's Niklas Sundin also deserves to be mentioned.
