REVIEW: In Flames - Whoracle Nuclear Blast, 1997
10/10
In Flames - Whoracle - cover art In Flames are to hordes of metal fans all over the world the ultimate representation of Swedish melodic death metal and this album is to me one of the highlights in the history of Swedish metal. It has it all - the passionate melodies and controlled aggression of their early material and the impeccable production of their subsequent releases. Together with "The Jester Race" this album is the best music the band has produced so far. Unforgettable songs like "Food For The Gods", "Jotun" and "Morphing Into Primal" took the Gothenburg masters to musical heights that I unfortunately doubt we will ever see again. This album also contains a wonderful instrumental song called "Dialogue With The Stars" that competes with classics like "Transylvania" and "Orion" over the instrumental of the 20th century title. I'm definitely not saying all of this just because I am Swedish because this is simply outstanding and beautiful metal at its best. What made In Flames so special was their ability to incorporate complex and often subtle melodies in their music in a way no other band does it. The lyrics are as usual abstract and very hard to grasp the real meaning of. To me this is the best album that In Flames have produced in their career.
