REVIEW: In Grey - MMIV Self-financed, 2004
6.5/10
In Grey - MMIV - cover art Even though you may never have heard of In Grey, they are in fact one of the oldest Swedish doom metal bands around. Having formed in 1992, they have never given up despite lack of label support and almost twenty members have been part of the band throughout the years with the only constant factor being guitarist Niklas Axelsson. Two Katatonia members - Guillaume Le Huche and Anders Nyström - have been members of In Grey as well in the past and this is not very strange because they travel in the same lane musically speaking. Heavily influenced by the English pioneers Anathema and Paradise Lost, In Grey have approached music in a similar way to Katatonia. As line-up changes are quite common in this band, this demo is the first to feature new vocalist Joakim Croneström who has a somewhat more consistent voice than the previous microphone inhabitant Dennis Liljedahl. Other than that not much has changed since the release of "Sulphur Tears" last year and just like that demo (or a self-financed full-length album if you wish) this one is graced with a hit song that really sticks out namely "Liyah", a song where the band members allow themselves to experiment with both the music and vocals. This is the way to go for the band in my opinion as their gothic rock flavoured doom metal otherwise tend to sound a little bit grey and dull at times. Not quite what "Sulphur Tears" was but not bad at all. As the band's website seem to be down for now, you can contact the band at ingrey@hotmail.com (Niklas Axelsson) or fredrik@klingwall.se (Fredrik Klingwall, keyboards).
