REVIEW: In Ovo - No Gods, No Masters self-released, 2008
2/10
In Ovo - No Gods, No Masters - cover art I’ll make this as quick and painless as I can, for the sake of preserving both my dignity and that of the band. When the most you can do is take the Lamb of God playbook, crib techniques liberally, dog-ear page after page for later reference and take the fieldwork back to the studio, then commit the “research” to CD and pass it off as your own, you’ve lost before you even really began. I’m sure these Texans are the bee’s knees in their neck of the woods (does San Antonio have woods?), but on a macrocosmic scale, amiable plagiarism doesn’t serve to pack all-ages shows. It invokes consternation and invites the most withering punditry from all comers. I’m never one to kick a band when it’s down (or on the way up), but stuff like this – with its incessant, recycled groove-riffs and lock-step rhythms – is scene-clogging detritus. Well-intentioned and dedicated to the lethality of metal’s pummeling nature, for sure, but that’s about as meaningful a criterion as applying to culinary school because you like fast food.
