REVIEW: Incantation - Blasphemy Candlelight Records, 2002
6/10
Incantation - Blasphemy - cover art Incantation anno 2002 is far from the original incarnation of the band since John McEntee is the only one left from its inception in 1989. This is a band that has been one of the leading underground death metal acts on the North American continent for very long now and "Blasphemy" is certainly a suitable name for their latest effort. Leaving the nowadays more experimental label Relapse Records behind them they have now found a new home with Necropolis Records who have always been supporting brutal music. In Europe the album is being licensed to Candlelight Records. I would be lying if I said that I was even the slightest bit surprised while listening to this album except for the fact that it is more than 70 minutes long. This is a marathon release when dealing with death metal and as you all know Americans are best when it comes to short distances. To go with the playing time they have given the seventh track of the album a title that even Bal-Sagoth would have been proud of. This is not very impressive though considering that there are two hidden tracks at the end of the disc - one with 22 minutes of nothing and one with three minutes of meaningless noise... Musically Incantation offers nothing but what the old fans of the band would expect - dark, ominous death metal from the old school. There is no Opeth experimentalism here and not much time for rest either, just tight, intense death metal. It is well executed and the growling is, if not exceptional, so at least solid but it feels as if the same riffs are used over and over again a little bit too much for my liking... Different is not always good and musical evolution is not always good but a band needs to have at least something new to show. Otherwise, why would you want to buy any new albums at all when you can listen to the old ones instead and still get the same thing? I hope that Incantation can do better than this in the future. I know they have in the time that used to be. This is an album that I will forget about very quickly but that is only doing Incantation a favor.
