REVIEW: Incendium - After Silence Self-financed, 2003
5.5/10
Incendium - After Silence - cover art Incendium is a Finnish band that was formed in 1997 under the name Black Shrine but after their first demo and the replacement of several members they decided to change their name. Not much has been heard from them since their last demo back in 1999 which secured them an interview with the famous Russian underground zine Vae Solis but now they are back again with a third demo. The main reason for this long period of silence is that the band had trouble finding a good place to rehearse. A lot has changed during these four years. When they did their last demo they were playing melodic death metal but like several other Finnish bands of the genre they have now developed into more of a gothic rock / metal band with melancholic clean vocals and heavy driving guitar rhythms. Incendium do this pretty good but the clean male vocals don't always sound as good as I would have wanted them to. The vocals lines are sometimes done very well when it comes to the melodies such as in "Life Sarcasm", it's just that the voice isn't good enough. There are still traces of their old sound left though, especially when it comes to the guitar melodies which are often very similar to those of melodic death metal á la Gothenburg. This is a very professional demo, the musicianship and song writing capabilities are all there but to me there is something missing. I don't doubt that Incendium could very well be a signed band within a few years time. It's very much a lottery out there today when there are so many bands doing the same thing. Stand-out tracks: "Crush".
