REVIEW: Indian - The Unquiet Sky Seventh Rule Recordings, 2005
8/10
Indian - The Unquiet Sky - cover art Sanford Parker's (from Minsk and Buried at Sea, producer of Pelican, Lair of the Minotaur, Unearthly Trance, etc.) Volume Studios is behind the madness that is the latest form of abuse from Chicago's (the new house of doom, anyone?) Indian. Whoa. The Unquiet Sky is abusive, unrelenting, heavy, and mean. Sounds like your mother-in-law on a meth/Ouzo bender, doesn't it? Only this has more teeth, son! Taking their cue from a barbiturate abusing Eyehategod or a quaalude-drowned Today is the Day, Indian's type of filthy sludge would take the polish off a new guitar at twenty paces. More Sludge than Stoner, this sonic madness is steeped in that brown acid vibe of early Monster Magnet (just listen to instrumental opener "No Able Fires" to hear shades of "Tab...25"), though in a not so light hearted manner, surely means excellence if not deafness. Indian is a power trio unlike (m)any other(s) and if you're in the Windy City you might very well catch these bastards destroying a stage and numerous ear drums somewhere. Roanoke and Indian ought to hit the tour circuit together for something that would really crush the masses. I have to say it. The press release got it right: "the sound is definitely some of the heaviest, darkest metal you will ever hear." This is not for everyone. Only Sludge purists need apply.
