REVIEW: Infernal Poetry - Not Light But Rather Visible Darkness Fuel Records, 2001
6/10
Infernal Poetry - Not Light But Rather Visible Darkness - cover art Infernal Poetry is a band from Ancona, Italy, that was formed in 1996 under the name Necronomicon (original name, isn't it?). They recorded a couple of demos before finally getting a deal with the native label Fuel Records who released this debut album of their's last year. Infernal Poetry combine harsh black metal vocals with melodic yet brutal death metal and an almost Opeth-esque atmosphere at times. The band sounds pretty mature and with competent song writing they have found themselves quite a number of fans throughout the world. This also resulted in a European tour together with Impiety, Decayed and Abigal in the year 2000. There are indeed some interesting music presented on this album but unfortunately it isn't very original and the vocals tend to be below average. Their sound is quite typical of melodic black metal bands from the Southern part of Europe these days and even if they tend to use influences from other genres to a higher extent and are good at what they do it gets rather boring in the end. I appreciate their more atmospheric passages though such as the intro and this is what they should keep developing if they want to grow on an international level. Thumbs up for the lyrics as well. A decent quality release that some of you will probably enjoy more than I did, especially if you like Ephel Duath and their followers.
