REVIEW: Insomnium - In The Halls Of Awaiting Candlelight Records, 2002
8/10
Insomnium - In The Halls Of Awaiting - cover art Finland is one of the strongest metal nations in the world at the moment and I was not very surprised when I was mighty impressed with this band called Insomnium. This is the Finnish version of older Dark Tranquillity but with a modern powerful sound. The melodies are wonderful with lots of almost folky tendencies and even though the production is not entirely perfect there is definitely not many things to annoy you on this album. Inspired by Finnish poetry and the thousands yet thousands of melancholic still lakes of the country Insomnium have created one of the most impressive debut releases that we will see during the year of 2002. After having been pretty anonymous for a while Candlelight Records is yet again building up a strong league of bands and I hope we will see this label bloom once again the way it did when Opeth and Cradle Of Filth resided there. Insomnium is a band that shows a lot of promise for the future and if you think most melodic death metal bands are lacking the edge and aggression that you think they should have you might want to check out this band. The growling vocals are exceptionally well done, actually some of the best I've ever heard, and the soft acoustic passages work as a perfect contrast to the more violent sounds. This is Nordic art at its best.
