REVIEW: Internal Suffering - Chaotic Matrix Displeased Records, 2002
7/10
Internal Suffering - Chaotic Matrix - cover art Well this is a band that has sure been hyped up a lot in the underground as of late. Hailing from Colombia, I'd say that this quartet is a safe bet for anyone into US band Disgorge. "Lurking Monstrosity" has some good riffing, but the bulk of the 11 songs is that rapid-fire downpicking chunk and grindy buzz in fast / slow structuring. Drummer Edwin has some stand-out cymbal work in the breakdown on the first track, and interesting snare shots on "Reborn In Victory", where triplets break the tedious 16th note hyper blasts. A lot of the song intros were nearly identical, until the chaos of "Vatican Bombardment" seemed to erase my memory altogether. Fabio's vocals left a bad taste in my mouth. Why? Because he sounds like I do when I'm desperately trying to tell the dentist how my day is going between mouthfulls of styrofoam, plastic and fluoride. Actually, they aren't bad. There's a cool breakdown tease in "Cataclysmic Origin" where I said "Yeah, yeah, another breakdown" as the first couple of chugs came in, then was surprised as the fast stuff flew at me. I'll bet that this band puts on a great live show if the set is no more than a half hour long. Nothing to write home about, but still better than power metal. Favorite tracks: "Vatican Bombardment", "Reborn In Victory".
