REVIEW: Iridio - Waves Of Life Standing Stones Records, 2004
8.5/10
Iridio - Waves Of Life - cover art When I was going through the latest batch of albums to review I was a surprised when I first heard this CD. It is not even remotely metal and I couldn’t figure out how it ended up mixed in with a bunch of metal CDs. Iridio does feature frontwoman Leanan Sidhe—known on this album as Valentina—from the metal band Beholder on vocals. Maybe that’s the connection, but again this album is far from anything metal.

Iridio is essentially a combination of electronic ambient music and various other global musical styles, which include Celtic, hints of Middle Eastern melodies and instrumentation, folk, and classical to name a few. The music is mainly piano- and keyboard-based with overlapping ambient effects. The myriad instrumentation used on this album is very similar to what Dead Can Dance and Delerium use, though this album more closely resembles some of the latter Delerium work. The track “The Free Ride Of The Spirit” prominently—and quite successfully—features a harmonica and flute intertwined with an electronic backdrop. I’m not sure Dead Can Dance or Delerium has ever been that bold. Vocally and musically this album is very soothing; it is very relaxing. The vocal melodies are an excellent compliment to the ambient music, which should please anyone who enjoys mellow, yet soaring electronic music with a female vocalist.
