The Eddie appearing on the cover of Iron Maiden's debut album is markedly distinct from all future Eddies. Similarly, the music of this album is much different from later albums. Instead of the prototypical heavy metal of subsequent releases, this album has a generous sprinking of rock 'n' roll, in both sound and attitude.
As in most heavy metal bands, the guitars are notable. They add melody and interest to the music, instead of just showing off technical skill. For a more amazing treat, however, be sure to listen to the strong, flowing basslines that both shape and ground the songs. The drums give the music a rock 'n' roll feel, as do the vocals. They sound as if they're coming from someone who's just rocking out and having fun rather than from an elite heavy metal vocalist. This rock 'n' roll attitude makes Iron Maiden's debut genuinely fun to listen to.
Lyrical themes on this album aren't as history- and fantasy-based as in later Maiden albums. They're more about everyday things, like "walking through the city" or "running free" on a crazy road trip. There are hints of fantasy, though, in songs like "Strange World" and "Phantom of the Opera."
If you're a fan of heavy metal, chances are you'll like this album, both as a piece of history and as something you can really rock out to!
