REVIEW: Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden EMI Records, 1981
10/10
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden - cover art This album will forever be held as one of the most important albums of all time by me and many others. Good ol' England was a virtual goldmine in the early days of metal and it's a shame that the evolution on the isles of Great Britain has faded. Still the world would never have been the same had not Ozzy, Maiden, Priest and others laid the ground for what later came to be known as the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal). There are not many metal bands who have made a career for themselves as quickly as did Iron Maiden but this revolutionary first release from them shows the reasons for this - a mix of passion, talent, attitude and surprising maturity that is simply breathtaking coming from a newborn. As we now know Iron Maiden was luckily not a star soon to fall. A complex song like "Phantom Of The Opera" belongs on a fourth or a fifth album from a 'normal' band. This release also contains one of the best instrumentals ever namely the geniously conceived "Transylvania" which makes even Metallica's "The Call Of Ktulu" seem pale in comparison. Bruce Dickinson may have a wider vocal range but Paul Di'Anno has a great voice too, more than fully sufficient for these songs. It's a pity he didn't look after himself and his career better than he did. Whoever the vocalist may be the spirit of Iron Maiden lives and dies with Steve Harris. Heavy metal in its prime!
