Isengard was a solo project of Darkthrone's
Fenriz where he could work on material that did not fit the Darkthrone concept
fully. "Vinterskugge" is the debut album but it does not contain any new
music but is only made up of the three demos from 1989 ("Spectres Over
Gorgoroth"), 1991 ("Horizons") and 1993 ("Vandreren"). This means that
the album is not very coherent but that is not really the most important thing
to make music sound good. In some aspects Isengard is similar to Darkthrone.
The production is in the same style and the lyrics are written both in English
and Norwegian. Isengard is however more epic, slower and slightly more
straightforward and groovy than Darkthrone. Fenriz also uses some clean viking
style vocals which will probably sound either ridiculous or powerful depending
on your taste or state of mind. "Vinterskugge" is partly a very good album
but it is a little uneven and it feels as if Isengard is mostly built on
Darkthrone leftovers. The music Fenriz does with Darkthrone is almost always
intrigueing and manages to capture the listener from the very beginning. This
is not really the case with and even though it is not a bad album it does not
possess this important quality. If you would like to hear what an epic folk
version of Darkthrone would sound like then you might want to check out
Isengard.
