J Mascis is most of all known as the singer and guitarist in Dinosaur Jr. The fact that he is a follower of the Indian saint Amma is not strange, but for the ones that have listened to Dinosaur Jr, the album “J + Friends sing + chant for Amma" is still most unexpected. It is not that the profit from the album goes to Amma's project that is surprising. That is understandable considering that Amma is doing a lot of good, like pledging 23 million dollars in relief aid to the victims of the tsunami that struck in December 2004. The unexpected is that most of the songs in the album sound like something that could have been recorded sitting around the campfire. The only exception from that is the last track that is an electrified version of a Sanskrit hymn that goes on and on and on… for 12 minutes. Listening to the first minute of the opening track one can be fooled into believing that this is a cozy singer-songwriter album. After a little while one realizes that it is just the same melody over and over again, six tracks in over 44 minutes, it is just as boring as it sounds. The profit that goes to Amma would certainly have been bigger if this had been a normal Mascis-album.
