My first encounter with Jorn Lande was, as for many more (I think), with the Masterplan debut. That record shook my world. I love it! And one of the things that make that album so big is this Norwegian's voice so when I received his solo ditto I sat up high expectations, unfortunately. When I first listened to it I thought it was crap. A total loss of spirit. It has become better on the later listenings though but it is far from the “genious” of Masterplan. Helping the main character out is Pagan Mind’s guitarist Jørn Viggo Lofstad and the drummer from the same band, Stian Kristoffersen, plus Hammerfall’s Magnus Rosén on bass and it’s nice that he gets to show his abilities too since he is one the best bass players in the world.
The piece of plastic contains very diverse songs and I’ve read somewhere that it’s possibly for Jorn to show that he can handle different styles. And there’s no talk about failure here, but some songs are better than the others and Mr. Lande sounds better on some songs than others. His harsh voice that melted me on “Heroes” hasn’t lost its sharpness yet. I hear Bryan Adams rock, Masterplan / AOR mixes, some modern Guns N’ Roses, Royal Hunt / Meat Loaf and in “Something Real” I thought about Spice Girls and Evergrey(!). Odd, yes, and I’m not sure that anyone else would think the same but in my opinion it sounds like that, and ok. But as I said: I had hoped for more.
