I am not quite old enough to have that special relation to
Judas Priest that many of you metal veterans out there have. I believe this
means that I am able to look upon their music more objectively than many
others, starting from scratch. When listening to an album like "British
Steel" you realize right away that people in general do not appreciate
complex music. Instead the major labels want bands who play simple, basic
music with memorable riffs and sing-along choruses. This is something that
annoys the hell out of me sometimes when I'm out on a club and the people
only want to hear songs with Kiss, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest and
other such bands. How about trying something new once in a while? People in
general are unfortunately like that which I think is a shame but they are of
course free to choose the music they listen to like anyone else. I love all of
these bands mentioned above but I love variety and creativity even more which
is why I finally end up ignoring the music completely at a place like that.
It's mostly the same thing at parties when people play the same songs over
and over again. Sure, they are great but we all know that by now... I hate
when people stay put and don't move forward. Enough said about this.
"British Steel" is one of the most appreciated Judas Priest albums and there
are certainly a few great songs here such as the classic "Breaking The Law"
but the album is a little uneven. For example, a track like "United" is too
commercial for my taste and commercial to me equals simple, ordinary, grey and
dull. Don't get me wrong, "British Steel" is an album that should be in
your record collection but it is definitely overrated. One thing that you also
realize while listening to an album like this one is that bands like Gamma Ray
and Primal Fear are pretty much Judas Priest copycats although their music is
more developed and modern sounding. Stand-out tracks: "Breaking The Law",
"Metal Gods".
