REVIEW: Judas Priest - Painkiller Columbia Records, 1990
9.5/10
Judas Priest - Painkiller - cover art The 'Painkiller' album is not only one of the best ever recorded by the legendary band Judas Priest but it's also one of the best albums of international Heavy Metal. The entire record is a demonstration of musical skill, sensational composing and extraordinary orchestration by the musicians from one of the most respected bands in rock music. All of the songs are regular concert crowd pleasers but they also manage to stick out as studio songs. The record contains only fast tempo songs, as in no ballads or such, and they can really kick life into the listener thanks to the mastery in wich the fabulous solos, killer vocals, superb drum beats and super riffs are perfectly combined into the ten songs of the album, and contarily to the naivity of the typical 'metal-lyrics'. Probably the best song of the record is 'Painkiller', wich kicks off with an impressive drum solo and carries on with the extraordinary unusual vocals and guitar solos, but songs like 'Between The Hammer And The Anvil', 'Night Crawler', 'All Guns Blazing' or 'One Shot At Glory' are also really good compositions. The 'weakest' songs of the album are probably 'Metal Meltdown' and 'Leather Rebel' wich, althogh prove the extraordinary musical capabilities of the band, are otherwise quite boring to listen to, not to mention they have the worst lyrics ever written. The songs of 'Painkiller' have a really good recording and a fantastic studio work behind them but they were definitely written to be performed on stage. The orchestration is fantastic, the musicians are outstanding, the vocals are also fabulous and the songs really rock. This is definitely the best record of the band and it deserves all the admiration and succes it got at the time of its release and also today.
