Jungle Rot is band that has been in the death metal game now for a good ten years. Similar in style to Bolt Thrower or Six Feet Under, the band takes pride in the fact that they have stuck to their groove laden death metal throughout the duration of their career. During that time, the Midwest based act has managed to release a number of albums and an EP, Darkness Foretold. Originally released in 1998, but not to the widespread general public, this represents a re-release on the Arizona based label Crash Music. Clocking in at about 25 minutes, Darkness Foretold sandwiches the title track in between some covers and live songs. The cover songs chosen are applaudable as they are all metal classics (Sodom, Slayer, & Carnivore), and the band does a commendable job of making these renditions their own. The fact that the Jungle Rot has chosen to cover thrash bands on these covers may tell you a bit about the type of death metal they are aspiring for. Then we have the title track followed by three live tracks off of earlier albums. These songs are pretty standard thrash oriented death metal, without the technicalities or complications of many of the modern acts today. While the sound may be a little sloppy on the live tracks, you can still get the feeling that the energy levels are quite high during the performance, and the band along with their fans are quite into it. Speaking of the fans, they are the ones who will benefit the most from this once hard to find EP. While I can’t imagine the demand for this disc will be sky rocketing, it should bring a grin to the face of long time fans and completists as it’s logical to assume it being re-released for their consumption. Combine this with the fact that Jungle Rot also released a new album in 2006 and it all ads up to a banner year for the fans and these rugged death metal veterans.
