REVIEW: Kaipa - Notes From The Past Inside Out Music, 2002
6/10
Kaipa - Notes From The Past - cover art The first thing that struck me when I sat down to listen to this album for the very first time in my life was that the vocalist sounded like a less developed version of Dream Theater's James LaBrie. There are no traces of metal to be found in the music of Kaipa though. This is strictly progressive rock inspired by the legendary bands from the 70's. Kaipa was actually there when it all happened. The band was formed in the early 70's and this is their 6th studio album but the first one since they broke up in 1982. The music is very melodic, suggestive and dreamy with plenty of hammond organs and mellotrons. Unfortunately I am not very much into rock music in general and the only thing that I find really interesting on this album is the vocal effort of Patrik Lundström who is usually to be found in the Swedish band Ritual. The album also features the drumming of Morgan Ågren who has played with giants such as Glen Hughes and Frank Zappa. As you probably understand this is world-class progressive rock at a very high level but unfortunately it does very little for me. There are some nice melodies, good vocals and a pleasant atmosphere but this is an album full of more than an hour of background music.
