REVIEW: Kamelot - Ghost Opera Steamhammer Records, 2007
9/10
Kamelot - Ghost Opera - cover art The road towards international fame and recognition has been long for Kamelot but that is usually the case with metal bands. It is easy to copy what has already been done but it takes both talent and time (perhaps also a bit of luck) to create something of your own. That is however what Kamelot has achieved over the course of fifteen years. While the band's early releases were competently executed yet somewhat basic power metal they have step by step added up to the amazing "The Black Halo" from 2005 which was to become their real break-through album. Chart positions in several countries were a fact, including Germany, Japan and Sweden where they also recently sold out their show in Stockholm. Kamelot have come a long way since they started out in Florida, USA back in 1991.

Now, time for the big question, can "Ghost Opera" top its predecessor? Well, I don't really have an answer for you. Even though the first three (excluding the intro) songs of the new album are excellent I don't think any of them can compete with the nearly perfect opening songs of "The Black Halo". However, "Ghost Opera" is a more complete and even collection without one single weak element. Listening to a Kamelot album today has become somewhat of a dive into unknown waters. The songs are complex and exciting without losing track of the melodic aspect, making almost every single song of the album a memorable experience. In the past Kamelot were tied up in King Arthur and fantasy but while the musical arrangements have become more ambitious the lyrics have become more human and down-to-earth. "Ghost Opera" is not a very happy and upbeat story though, instead it comes off more as a Shapespearian tragedy.

It can not be argued that Norwegian frontman Roy Khan plays a very important role in the success of Kamelot. His charismatic, dynamic and personal appearance has grown stronger with each new album and once again he provides that little extra needed to lift the band to the top of the mountain. There are exceptionally few unique bands in the progressive power metal genre but Kamelot is one of them and "Ghost Opera" is one of the strongest releases of 2007 so far. Excellent!
