"This is the life we chose, the life we lead, and there is only one guarantee: none of us will see heaven". With these words we enter the world of pain, war and suffering which is Kataklysm. These Canadians are like a machine that just keeps on going but unlike machines they never seem to break down or get old. In that way they are similar to a few other giants in the death metal arena such as Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Bolt Thrower. For those of you who have followed this blast-beat oriented band throughout their career their new album "Serenity In Fire" will not come as a surprise. The blast-beats are still there of course but they continue their journey into more melodic and atmospheric domains while not parting ways with their brutal roots. This album is their heaviest one so far and the production is flawless in my opinion apart from the fact that the vocals should have been a little louder in places. Not only being veterans in their particular field of musical expertise Kataklysm are also among a handful of death metal bands who have found themselves a unique and innovative approach to the music. "Serenity In Fire" does follow pretty much the same concept as the previous two releases from the band. It does sound simple but in reality it isn't. It is easy copying the same ten songs album after album but it is not easy to follow the same guiding lights but at the same time creating something new. This is where song writing abilities come in as the factor which separates the great ones from the mass. Kataklysm once again prove their skills as song writers and these ten tracks are as memorable as they are intense. You know what you get when you buy a Kataklysm album but it never gets boring. I've already listened to the album ten times plus and I still love it. "Serenity In Fire" no doubt promises to be one of the highlights of 2004 for death metal fans.
