REVIEW: Kataklysm - Shadows & Dust Nuclear Blast, 2002
8.5/10
Kataklysm - Shadows & Dust - cover art Kataklysm is a very productive band and they are already back with the follow-up to last year's "Epic (The Poetry Of War)". The sound of their new and sixth album is unmistakingly the true Kataklysm sound but this is the most varied release from the Canadians so far, perhaps also the best one. On a track like "Beyond Salvation" you can hear some more straight-forward heavy metal riffs moving into their blastbeat symphonies and on the dark, ominous "Illuminati" something very close to a black metal atmosphere is created. The next song "Chronicles Of The Damned", which is also one of the highlights of the album, shows some clear At The Gates tendencies. Old fans of the band don't have to worry though. The speed, intensity and blast-beat machinery has not been abandoned. Kataklysm are staying true to their roots but at the same time they are not afraid of development. This has put them among the elite of today's extreme metal scene. Together with the new albums from Hate Eternal, The Crown and Vader this is one of the highlights of 2002 if you don't have anything against high-quality death metal. If you do then I beg you to open your eyes and ears because Kataklysm deserve it.
