“Brave Murder Day” is the second full-lenght album from this Swedish doom-trio. Actually an occasional four-piece, cause Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth is taking the aggressive vocals on him to help out singer/drummer Jonas Renske who was unable to do his screaming thing during the recording of the album. The clean vocals however are from Renske.
Musically the album is a bit faster than their earlier work, but thematically it is still about the reciprocal coexistence among hope and sorrow (at least that’s my opinion). Katatonia is able to evoke an atmosphere of deep emotional despair that leaves you behind with the contradictory feeling of satisfaction and scarcity. They obtain this superb sentiment by only using the standard outfit: guitar, bass and drums. No need for decorative instruments like keyboard, violin, etc. This is an achievement worth mentioning.
The guitar lines tend to have a simple riff pattern, repeating itself over and over, not leading to boredom, but to an epic melancholic feeling. If you would ask me to draw a comparision with other bands, I would have to say some old Paradise Lost (an Gothic-esque riff in “Murder”) and Opeth. But certainly no copy, Katatonia has definitely his own approach an style.
Slightly varying from the rest, is the more gothic track “Day”, with clean vocals and clean guitars. An calmly interlude between the gloomy entity.
If we look at the lyrically aspect of the album, we notice that it is very fragmentary and embraces themes as loss, pain and sorrow, wich is an perfect complement to the musical concept.
This album is definitely a recommended release that will brighten up or embitter your day, according to your spirit. Doom at it’s best !!
