REVIEW: Katatonia - Dance Of December Souls No Fashion Records, 1993
9/10
Katatonia - Dance Of December Souls - cover art This is a nice album by the Swedish death/doom metal band Katatonia. It's filled with slow, heavy, guitar-based very melodic symphonies about tormented souls and painful sorrow. The vocals are traditional death metal growling by Lord J. Renkse, not as well done as bands like Tristania but still better than average. The music is as mentioned above slow and heavy, mostly based on great melodic guitars accompanied by not very protruding drums and bass. This album contains one of the best songs I've ever heard - track No 6 Velvet Thorns - when you have heard that one I assure you you would want this album right away! The only thing you could remark on is that except for that song the album sounds very similar all the way through and you could get tired of their music rather quickly. Still, Katatonia is definitely one of the best Swedish bands in this genre during the 90s. The album was recorded at Unisound Studios April 4-9 1993, produced by the great Dan Swanö, mixed and engineered by Dan Swanö and Day D'Syrrah, who also did all the keyboards. If you like melodic doom/death you will probably like this one.
