REVIEW: Katatonia - July Peaceville Records, 2007
8/10
Katatonia - July - cover art "The Great Cold Distance" is in my opinion one of the best albums ever made and apparently many agree with me as it has not only spawned two but now three single releases. Katatonia have always had a unique sound but they have been a band in progression since day one, from the blackened doom metal of their epic "Dance Of December Souls" in the early 90s to their atmospheric mix of melancholic rock and gothic metal of today. Few bands manage to change so drastically and still maintain a personality but Katatonia is lucky enough to be one of the few. "July" does of course contain the track with the same title off the full-length album but also a brand new song called "Unfurl", a calm and soothing tune that would not have stuck out as misplaced if put on the actual album. It is not one of their strongest pieces though. The single also comes with a video for the "July" song as well as a remix of the album favorite "Soil's Song" by awarded Swedish producer and songwriter Krister Linder (recently also seen fronting the metal act Enter The Hunt). I fail to see the single as essential though and unless you are fanatic about the band you should pick up the full-length album first because it is simply amazing.
