My Twin - EP is a 4-song single put out by Katatonia to build interest for the upcoming The Great Cold Distance album. The choice of “My Twin” as the first single off of The Great Cold Distance was definitely the right choice. The song starts off calm and explodes into an infectious and cathartic chorus that is perhaps the best one ever written by the band. “My Twin (Opium Dub)” is essentially the song as “My Twin” only with a slower tempo and sparser instrumentation. “Displaced” is a longer (for Katatonia) song with vocals that sound digitally modified in the chorus. The deliberately paced, “Dissolving Bonds” is a slower song that features a mournful chord progression powered forward by forceful double bass drumming. The four songs here are of the highest quality and if there is any flaw with the EP it is that it leaves the listener wanting more. Even though “My Twin” will show up on The Great Cold Distance, the single is still an essential purchase for Katatonia fans due to the two unreleased songs. In short, the EP is a brief but satisfying preview of the upcoming album and is well worth the low price.
