The Swedish band Katatonia has undergone a
change that is almost unbelievable. If you listen to their debut album "Dance
Of December Souls" and then this one there would be no chance hearing that it
was the same band because the resemblance is just about zero. Gone with the
wind are the tormented screams and the black metal feeling that was to be
found on the first album. The new sound that they have developed in these
years is a lot cleaner with a soothing warm flow and clean vocals. Sort of
like a mix between doom metal and gothic rock you might say. There is still a
strong melancholic and sad feeling about their music and lyrics although there
is no extreme agony and torment such as before. Perhaps you loose the
"ability" to overdo everything when you grow older and become more mature.
No matter what Katatonia has brought a whole new dimension of doom metal to
the minds of thousands of people and the subtle warm melodies on "Tonight´s
Decision" are evidence that Katatonia deserves a place among the big names in
their genre like My Dying Bride and Anathema. As far as doom metal goes Sweden
and the Nordic countries have not been able to produce as many bands as they
have when it comes to black and death metal but Katatonia is definitely a band
that has made a mark on the scene throughout the world. Who would have thought
that Jonas Renkse actually could sing after hearing the first album?
"Tonight´s Decision" was recorded and mixed at Sunlight Studio Feb-Apr 1999,
produced by the band, vocals co-produced by Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth,
engineered by Tomas Skogsberg and Joakim Pettersson and finally mastered at
Polar Studios by Mia Lorentzson. The artwork and design was done by the one
and only Travis Smith.
