REVIEW: Katatonia - Viva Emptiness Peaceville Records, 2003
9/10
Katatonia - Viva Emptiness - cover art Katatonia stated earlier on that their new studio album would be heavier and more guitar driven than their previous couple of releases. This is partly also the case with "Viva Emptiness", the sixth full-length outcome of the band's productiveness, but even though it is slightly heavier than usual it still has that soft, mellow and melancholic sadness that only Katatonia are capable of picturing with their music. Katatonia has always been one of the most unique and important Swedish metal bands ever since they released their mini album "Jhva Elohim Meth.. The Revival" back in 1992. Today they have come a long way from their early harsh black / death metal sound but they still remain as one of the leading bands on the Swedish metal scene. The somewhat heavier appearance takes away a little of that depressive and peculiar atmosphere that has been present on the last couple of releases but it also adds a brand new dimension to the Katatonia sound. The thing that worries me just a little is that their new heavy riffs sound a little too much like Machine Head. Luckily "Viva Emptiness" still breathes Katatonia and I am sure old fans of the band will embrace this album as well, at least I have. The wonderful clean vocals by Jonas Renkse are as beautifully sad as usual and he is definitely one of the most important assets of the band. One of the highlights of 2003 so far. Stand-out tracks: "Ghost Of The Sun", "Criminals".
