REVIEW: Kaul - [demo cd] Self-financed, 2001
7/10
Kaul - [demo cd] - cover art Kaul is a duo from Los Angeles, California, that was formed a few years ago when Paul Calder and Kian Ahmadian met while working on Matt Groening's well-known TV series Futurama. Both these guys have been working on several other film projects, Paul as and editor and Kian as writer, director and sound designer. You can easily notice the soundtrack tendencies on this demo cd from these two multi-talented guys. The songs on this demo also sound very different from one another with everything from rather aggressive black metal sounds to soft darkwave and classical influences. They label themselves as a darkwave metal band and perhaps that is the best way to classify them although their music defies all attempts of doing this. The cd opens up with a very impressive and powerful track called "In Cold" which shows the band at their best with powerful vocals, both clean and growling ones. Even though the rest of the songs fail to impress me as much as that one they are all enjoyable and works above all very well as background music which is probably a result of their movie making backgrounds. I would describe their music as a mix of darkwave, black metal and gothic rock. As you understand there is always a very dark atmosphere that surrounds every song. Kaul is an interesting band and they have managed to achieve something very important in today's world - they don't sound like every other band.
