The Norwegian band Keep of Kalessin is back with its fourth full-length album. Armada which etymologically comes from the same family of Army and Armed Forces, means a fleet of ships, and this album creates a dark atmosphere, which to me highly resembles the journey of a group of ships at night. I was really curious to listen to the new opus from this band, because their previous MCD, Reclaim, with Attila Csihar and Frost is one of my all-time favorites.
In this album, Obsidian C has made great music and repeated the outstanding passages which were used quite efficiently in their previous album. The guitars and drumming are in harmony with the dark atmosphere of the album. However, although the new vocalist is just good in some tracks which need the ordinary snarling and screeching of black metal music (like "Many Are We" and "Winged Watcher"), he obviously fails to manage his voice over more complex tracks like "The Black Uncharted," "Crown of Kings," "Into the Fire," and "Armada." This band has the potential for creating a wonderful masterpiece if they find a vocalist who, like Attila Csihar, can match his vocals to the music.
