REVIEW: Kemet - Dying With Elegance Deadsun Records, 2000
5.5/10
Kemet - Dying With Elegance - cover art "Dying With Elegance" is the second release from the French band Kemet. I have found it very hard to review this album since I´m not quite sure what I think about it. Musically it´s a mid-tempo dark metal history with both deathy and dark, clean vocals garnered by a French accent. It is very dynamic, changing from growling to clean, from fast and aggressive to slow and emotional. In short there is a lot of passion put into the music. It´s not quite enough to make for a magnificent world-class album but it is not bad and far from the worst album that has hit the market this year. This kind of music is a little too chaotic to enter the depths of my soul but it does have it´s good moments I have to admit. In general the slower emotional passages are better than the more aggressive sections but there are of course exceptions like the nice riffs five minutes into the third track. More diverse drumming, a thicker guitar sound and a little bit more exciting songs (perhaps developing the emotional sound further?) would make Kemet a lot better in my ears. The vocals don´t really seem to suit me either but that is probably just a matter of taste since I am one of those strange people who hate AC/DC mainly because of those really annoying vocals. This is not a bad release though and it could certainly be of interest to all you fans of dark metal who don´t mind a few growls. Additional female vocals were done by Véronique Hoy.
