Italy’s Kernel (ugh, what a name!) does a fairly adept job of cribbing judiciously from the Alex Perialas-engineered thrash bands of yore (Overkill, Testament, Anthrax) and imbuing that blueprint with both general hardcore toughguydom and continental European metal melody. The band’s Sodom influences are definitely in check as well, as evinced by the somewhat dull-witted tendency to accelerate into snare drum polka at some point in nearly every song. The six-minute “Burn World” is probably Servant of God's finest showcase, as it allows for a gradually developed mood, variance of tempo and downcast melodic heft. But oh, that title! “Burn World?” “Rebel Yourself?” How 'bout the album title itself, which seems primed to tag this band wrongly as a Christian bunch.... How do you say "irony" in Italian? Yea and verily, charmingly butchered English abounds in a guffaw-inducing way that only the Italians can truly master, and while the dicey grammar and thick accents don’t offend my non-jingoistic sensibilities (after all, I do feel zee endless pain), it does provide an area for needed improvement on Kernel’s part. Ditto the clear but somewhat instrumentally disjointed mix. Nine songs in all, two in the Renaissance tongue, all worth a couple of your hard-earned dollars. Or lira.
